A 26-year-old woman in Lucknow died by suicide on Monday, barely six months after her marriage, with her family accusing her husband and in-laws of sustained dowry harassment that drove her to take her own life. Shweta Singh was found hanging at her in-laws' residence in Lucknow's Thakurganj area. Her family has alleged that she faced repeated demands for dowry, including pressure for a four-wheeler, and that her in-laws murdered her before staging the scene to look like suicide. Shweta had married Bhupendra Singh, also known as Shubham Singh, on November 22, 2025. According to her father, Umesh Kumar Singh, the harassment began soon after the wedding. Popular Malayalam film actor and former Lok Sabha MP, Innocent died on Sunday. He was 75 years old.
Innocent was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and had been hospitalised earlier this month after having difficulties breathing.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor condoled the former Lok Sabha MP's death and said that he was a brilliantly inventive and gifted actor.
"Mourning the loss of character actor, comedian & one-time Kerala MP Innocent, who has just passed away at age 75. Aside from being a brilliantly inventive and gifted actor, he was a fine human being whom it was a pleasure to interact with in the Lok Sabha. RIP. Om Shanti," Mr Tharoor said on Twitter.
