Trump Says US 'Wants To Help China, Not Hurt It', Days After Tariff Threat

President Donald Trump said Sunday the United States wants to help China, not hurt it, striking a conciliatory tone days after threatening an additional 100 per cent tariff on the world's second-largest economy. Trump's statements on Friday as well as his threat to cancel a meeting with Xi later this month sent Wall Street stocks tumbling into negative territory as traders worried the trade war between Washington and Beijing could reignite. "The USA wants to help China, not hurt it!!!" Trump said in Sunday's post on Truth Social, adding that "respected President Xi (Jinping)... doesn't want Depression for his country." Trump on Friday said that he would impose the extra levies from November 1 in response to what he called "extraordinarily aggressive" new Chinese export curbs on the rare-earths industry. Beijing, in turn, accused Washington of acting unfairly, with its Ministry of Commerce on Sunday calling Trump's tariff threat a ...

Arshad Nadeem's Coach Banned For Life By Pakistan's Athletics Federation

Salman Iqbal, the long serving coach of Pakistan's top athlete Arshad Nadeem, was on Sunday banned for life by the country's Athletics Federation for violating the constitution of the Punjab Athletics Association, where he holds the position of President. Under the life ban, Iqbal cannot take part in any athletics activities nor coach or hold office at any level. The violations the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation (PAAF) has accused Iqbal of committing by holding elections of the Punjab body occured back in August. An inquiry committee was formed in mid-September and it recommended the ban on Iqbal on October 10, a day after his reply to the PSB came out. The decision appears to be linked to the recent crisp reply Iqbal had sent to the state-run Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) when they asked him to explain Nadeem's poor show in the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. PSB also demanded to know details about the expenses incurred on the javelin thrower's training a...

Bihar Man Wanted To Marry Girlfriend, So He Set Second Wife Ablaze

A man in Bihar wanted to marry his girlfriend, but his second wife objected. Angered by this, he doused her in petrol, released LPG from a cylinder, and set her ablaze, officials said on Saturday. Vikas Kumar, from a village in Nalanda district, had married Sunita Devi (25) five years ago. Sunita's father said it was only after the wedding that they realised Kumar had already been married once and had not divorced his first wife.  Kumar's family managed to convince Sunita to live with them, and she had two children, both of whom died shortly after they were born. Kumar then began talking about marrying his girlfriend and this led to frequent arguments between him and Sunita, who then left to live with her parents. Before the Durga Puja festival, which began last month, Kumar went to Sunita's house and asked her to return with him. Sunita's brother said they received a call from her around 1 am on Saturday, saying Kumar had thrown petrol on her and locked her in the ...

The Indian telecom story is one which has seen amazing opportunities in the last few years. From 2G to 3G, 4G and 5G, what does the future hold? Behind all the technology is another story of hard work, design and manufacturing - and that's where the tech company Qualcomm comes into the Indian picture. Qualcomm President Cristiano R Amon in an interview with NDTV's Vishnu Som said 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI (artificial intelligence). "We started with 2G... 3G was about connecting to the Internet, 4G was about broadband and making the phone into a computer, 5G was about making sure that everyone could have unlimited data rates... 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI," Amon said. What 6G is going to do, he said, besides providing faster and cheaper communication, is to deploy "sensing networks" which is going to be incredibly important for the age of AI. Afghan Minister Sparks Outrage With 'Ban' On Women Journalists At Press Meet

A press conference by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi has caused outrage because no women were allowed to attend the event.  Muttaqi is a part of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the group is known for the restrictions it imposes on women, essentially barring them from working. The Taliban's human rights record and the possibility of terror groups getting a safe haven in Afghanistan have been some of the factors which have made India cautious in its engagement with the group.  Muttaqi, who arrived in India on Thursday, held talks with Jaishankar on Friday. The meeting, seen as a big reset of ties, saw India announcing that the technical mission in Kabul would be upgraded to an embassy, which was welcomed by the Afghanistan foreign minister. "India is fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan. I am pleased to announce the upgrading of India's Technical Mission to the status of emb...

"Attackers Said They Were Didi's Men": BJP MP On Assault By Mob In Bengal

Khagen Murmu, the BJP MP attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress goons, has vehemently refuted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's assertion that the locals at the flood-hit Jalpaiguri area where he had gone two days ago to distribute aid, had attacked him. Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were set upon by a group of men, who, he said, were brought from other places, including Delhi, to block the entry of the BJP leaders.  Videos of the attack on the two leaders and images of a profusely bleeding Murmu have been widely circulated on social media. Describing the attack as a "law and order situation," Mamata Banerjee had said, "I don't want to politicise it. But if you take 30-40 cars inside a village that has lost everything, what can you expect?" Lying on his hospital bed, Murmu questioned how big a convoy can four MPs and a similar number of MLAs take. "How many cars were there? There was one MP or one MLA in each car, along with a few people from our d...

19 US Lawmakers Urge Trump To "Reset And Repair" Ties With India

19 US Lawmakers on Wednesday wrote a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to "reset and repair" India-US "critical partnership." The letter was co-signed by several prominent Democratic leaders, including Deborah Ross, Ro Khanna, Brad Sherman, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Pramila Jayapal. Notably, no Republican lawmakers signed it. The Congress members warned that the US President's recent tariff hikes, which raised duties on Indian goods to as high as 50 per cent, have undermined relations with India and hurt both American consumers and manufacturers. "We write as Members of Congress representing districts with large, vibrant Indian-American communities that maintain strong familial, cultural, and economic ties to India. Recent actions by your administration have strained relations with the world's largest democracy, creating negative consequences for both countries. We urge you to take immediate steps to reset and repair thi...

'Deal With Them Better': Ashwin Blunt Amid Rohit, Virat Retirement Rumours

Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retire soon after India's ODI series against Australia? The three-match series, starting on October 19, will be Kohli and Rohit's first international assignment since the Champions Trophy 2025. The two players have already retired from T20Is and Tests. With the next big ODI tournament - the 2027 World Cup - being almost two years away, there are question marks on whether Kohli and Rohit will be persisted with. Ravichandran Ashwin , who has played for a long time with the star duo, says Kohli and Rohit are at the back-end of their careers. "On one side is selection, on the other side is Kohli and Rohit. These are two sides of the same coin. The selection and selectors have clearly shown that the team had decided to move forward. However, in this process, there are two players who are at the back end of their careers. You like it or not, they are at the back-end of their careers. However, one thing I would like to say, the way to deal wit...

Chinese Woman Swallows 8 Live Frogs To Treat Back Pain. This Happens Next

Indian Student With $100,000 Columbia Scholarship Denied US Visa. Here's Why

Kaushik Raj, a 27-year-old journalist from Delhi, was all ready to live his American dream with a $100,000 (approximately Rs 89 lakh) scholarship in hand to pursue a master's degree in data journalism at Columbia University. But all his plans came crashing down when the United States' immigration department denied his student visa. Raj, who completed all the visa formalities, including the interview, believes the rejection was linked to his social media activity. Under the Donald Trump administration, social media vetting has become an integral part of the visa selection process. Speaking to The Washington Post, Raj claimed he wasn't very active on social media and "refrained from publicising his personal feelings about hot-button global issues, such as Israel's war in Gaza." However, he said that in four years of his journalistic career, he often focused on hate crimes, which was reflected in his social media activities. Raj's semester at Columbia Uni...

A Beauty Pageant For Buffaloes In Thailand Raises Status Of Humble Animal

It was 5-year-old Tod's first time competing in a beauty pageant and the bright red interior of his ears turned out and popped against his black fur. The main stud for his owner, food vendor and farmer Thawatchai Daeng-Ngam, Tod was one of the competitors Monday at the annual water buffalo racing festival in Chonburi, a city about an hour drive from Bangkok. Formerly considered humble draft animals, water buffaloes have become prized show animals in Thailand. They are celebrated at the festival, held at the end of the 11th lunar month to celebrate the beginning of the harvest season and put a spotlight on the animals that once were vital to Thai agriculture. These days tractors have replaced buffaloes, once prized for their strength and ability to plow fields and transport heavy loads. If the animals are not competing in shows, they are sold for meat. Buffaloes were the main attraction at the fair in Chonburi, which kicked off with a parade featuring students performing traditi...

Video: Noida Residents Rattled After Cobra Takes Elevator Ride

It was not quite the kind of passenger anyone expected in the lift of a high-rise society in Noida, but there it was, a cobra, hood flared, writhing on the floor.  Residents of the Golden Palm Society in Sector 168 got the fright of their lives on Sunday when they discovered the reptile lounging in the elevator. According to witnesses, a few residents had been waiting for the lift when it arrived with the unexpected occupant -- a full-grown cobra. What followed was panic and a frantic call to the society's maintenance team. Armed with makeshift tools, the society's maintenance staff managed to trap the cobra safely inside a garbage bin. The snake was later released into a nearby open area. But the encounter has left residents deeply uneasy. The residents said that if a snake can ride the lift, it can go anywhere -- the gym, the lobby, even inside flats. Cough Syrup, Then More Sickness And Death: Shell-Shocked Families Try To Cope

For the families of the children who died in Chhindwara, compensation means little. What is Rs 4 lakh when your child is gone? What is government aid when you've already sold your home, your jewellery, and your dreams to keep a heartbeat going? After days of denial, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for each of the 11 children who died after consuming Coldrif Cough Syrup.  The government will also bear the full cost of treatment for those still fighting for their lives in hospitals. But for the parents in Parasia, the wounds are beyond repair. Many have lost not just their children but everything they owned trying to save them. Drums, Bikes And Conservatism: The Making Of Japan's First Woman PM

Sanae Takaichi has been elected as the head of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), placing her in line to become the nation's first woman prime minister. She defeated Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former leader Junichiro Koizumi, in a run-off on Saturday after no candidate secured a majority in the initial round. A parliamentary vote to choose the next prime minister is expected on October 15. A Conservative Figure In A Male-Dominated Arena At 64, Takaichi has long been associated with the right wing of the LDP. Women remain vastly under-represented in Japanese politics. Only about 15% of the powerful lower house are female, and just two women serve as prefectural governors. While some hoped her election might signal change, many observers are sceptical. Yuki Tsuji, a Tokai University professor who specialises in gender and politics, said Takaichi "has no interest in women's rights or gender equality policies." She has historically opposed proposals designed...

Amazon's Jeff Bezos Calls AI Boom 'Kind Of Industrial Bubble': 'This Is Real'

Amid the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) across the globe, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has claimed that there is an 'industrial bubble', but the technology is 'real' and will bring big benefits to society. He stressed that AI will “change every industry,” calling it a once-in-a-generation technological shift. "This is kind of an industrial bubble as opposed to financial bubbles," said Bezos at the Italian Tech Week 2025 in Turin, Italy. He further explained the difference between an industrial and banking bubble: "The banking bubble, the crisis in the banking system, that's just bad, that's like 2008. Those bubbles society wants to avoid. The ones that are industrial are not nearly as bad, they can even be good. Because when the dust settles and you see who are the winners society benefits from those inventions," he said. "That's what is going to happen here too. This is real. The benefits to society from AI are going to...

In a now-viral Reddit post, the employee stated that they had secured the bank job nine months ago after studying hard for it, but the story after starting the job was completely different. "I've been working at a public sector bank for 9 months now, and honestly? I feel like we've all been sold a lie," the employee wrote in the r/IndianWorkplace subreddit, adding: "I studied so hard for it, and when I got in, my family was so proud. There is no respect, neither from customer nor from management. For management we are slaves." The employee said they were given 'insane' targets and told to sell insurance, credit cards and loans while the work pressure was non-stop. "I'm a banker, not a street vendor. A collective of anonymous and satirical installation artists, who dub themselves "The Secret Handshake," said they had reinstalled the statue at its original site on the mall after obtaining permission from the National Park Service (NPS). Extra Fee For Cash-On-Delivery? Minister Promises Crackdown On 'Dark Patterns'

Cracking down on 'dark patterns' employed by e-commerce companies, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has said firms that charge extra for cash-on-delivery will now face action. Several companies make consumers pay an extra fee if they opt for the cash-on-delivery option rather than pre-paying for the order online. Railing against such practices, an X user had, on Wednesday, posted about an experience he had with an e-commerce firm in which he was charged Rs 226 in the name of 'offer handling fee, payment handling fee and protect promise fee'. "Forget Rain Fee by Zomato/Swiggy/Zepto. See the masterstroke by Flipkart: Offer Handling Fee (for giving me the discount you advertised??); Payment Handling Fee (for letting me pay you??) and Protect Promise Fee (protecting me from what... satisfaction?)," he wrote "Next up: "Scrolling App Fee"," he joked. Responding to the post on Friday, Joshi said such practices will be scrutinised and p...

US Government Shutdown Hits H-1B Visa Processing: How It Affects Indians

After US President Donald Trump and Congress failed to reach a funding deal by Wednesday's deadline, the government shutdown began. As a result, hundreds of thousands of federal employees face furloughs, and many offices will be closed. H-1B visas will also face a pause until the shutdown ends, says immigration attorney Nicole Gunara. She said that H-1B visa filings will not be processed until the Congress can agree on federal funding allocations. Gunara explained how the H-1B visa process goes through different steps, starting from filing a labour condition application known as an LCA with the Department of Labour (DOL). Once the LCA is certified, the concerned company moves ahead to file an H-1B petition with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). She clarified that the USCIS operates on filing fees; hence, the shutdown will not affect its operations. However, the DOL requires funding from the Congress and will stop work related to immigration until a funding bill...

Gold prices on Wednesday (Oct 1) traded at a new high of levels above the Rs 1,17,000 mark in India. The gold prices rallied by Rs 1,100 to breach the Rs 1.21 lakh per 10 grams mark in the national capital. As per PTI, the All India Sarafa Association said that gold of 99.9 per cent purity jumped Rs 1,100 and hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,21,100 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). The recent surge occurred amid the US government shutdown after Congress failed to approve fresh federal funding. The ongoing standoff could lead to the loss of thousands of federal jobs. The shutdown might also halt the release of a September employment report, slow air travel, suspend scientific research and even withhold pay from US troops.  Will gold prices increase further, and should people invest now? Meanwhile, in India, buyers are discussing whether or not the prices will increase further, especially ahead of Diwali, when a large number of people buy gold and silver. Madhya Pradesh Man Bleeds Outside Police Station While Cops Get Car Washed

Daboh police station in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district has once again brought the police under sharp criticism, with an incident that residents described as the height of negligence and insensitivity. In what many are calling a glaring example of " MP ajab hai, sabse gajab hai ," a grievously injured man was left unattended outside a police station while officers allegedly prioritised getting their car washed. The incident happened on Tuesday in Barthara village under Daboh police station limits. According to reports, a long-standing property dispute turned violent when Narayan Parihar and Komal Parihar attacked their relative, Shyamu Parihar, with an axe and sticks while he was constructing a wall. Bleeding heavily, Shyamu Parihar was rescued by his brother Ramu, who rushed him to the police station seeking urgent help and protection. But instead of immediate medical attention or prompt filing of a case, what followed shocked bystanders. Witnesses alleged that polic...
